Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT)

Verve - VSAT Overview

Satellites are one of the most incredible inventions of the 20th century, but what they can do for us today is even more amazing. Verve Very Small Aperture Terminal (VERVE VSAT) is a technology that uses satellite communications for the means if communicating. The satellite signal can either carry voice, data and video securely and effectively. This will compliment the existing network, i.e. communication to unreachable areas by terrestrial lines.

A very small aperture terminal (VSAT) is placed at customer's premise and to be use to receive and transmit satellite transmissions. The "very small" component of the VSAT acronym refers to the size of the VSAT dish antenna typically about 1.8m to 3.8m in diameter- that is mounted on a rooftop, side walls, or placed on the ground. This antenna, along with the attached low-noise block or LNB (which receives satellite signals) and the transmitter (which send signals) make up the VSAT outdoor unit (ODU), one of the components of a VSAT earth station

The second component of VSAT is the indoor unit (IDU). The indoor unit is a small desktop box that contains a satellite modem and IP router which will interface with the user's existing in-house IP equipment - LANs, servers. PCs, TVs, kiosks, etc. The indor unit is connected to the outdoor unit with a pair of cables

The key advantage of Verve VSAT, versus a typical terrestrial network connection, is that the reach of buried cable does not limit Verve VSAT. A Verve VSAT can be placed anywhere - as long as it has an unobstructed view of the satellite. Verve VSAT is capable of sending and receiving data and voice at the same high speed as terrestrial networks regardless of their distance from terrestrial switching offices infrastructure. Verve VSAT has been proven to integrate with a LAN ans also
to be connected to application servers sudh as e-mail, RDBMS, CRM and others

VSAT Satellite System

Verve VSAT is reliable, efficient and affordable private VSAT network for data, multimedia and voice application. Leveraging the reach and power of satellite, Verve VSAT provides high-performance networking between the headquarter and the remote office - without the need for terrestrial infrastructure. Modular and expandable, Verve VSAT intgrates multiple applications into a single platform: interactive date, voice, and IP multimedia broadcasts; multicasts and unicast can all function from  the same network. A unique patented satellite access scheme, ASIC-based receiver, powerful integrated communications controller, and small antenna and  modular design ensure outstanding network performance for a system that's reliable, efficient and affordable.

Verve VSAT network offers advanced features that ensure maximum performance for your data, video and audio networking, such as:
  • Secured Private VSAT network (Financial institution, Government agencies, etc.)
  • E-Learning (educational institution, large multinational corporation, government offices)
  • IP-multicasting for large file or multimedia broadcasting such as billboards, live events, media agencies, printing agencies, entertainment industry, advertising agencies, etc.
  • High-speed video uplink (up to 2 Mbps) for broadcasters
  • Video conferencing

Concurrent Protocol Support
Verve VSAT can be configured  to implemented different protocols concurrently. It can simultaneously support SDLC, X.25, TCP/IP including routing, voice, MPEG1 and MPEG2 video and more

Multicast Service
IP multicast delivers information to a large number of recipients simultaneously. Implementing IP multicast via satellite as an added value overlay to interactive data networks provides a single-tier architecture for multicast applications. Multicast applications include the transmission of live video/audio streams of news and entertainment, multimedia corporate training, database replication, software update distribution and dissemination of financial data

Efficient Space Segment Utilization
Verve VSAT uses IP technologies to speed up network performance and reduce traffic traveling over satellite. By allowing individual remote sites to transmit data on any channel at any time traffic is automatically balanced across all channels, improving network throughput. To manage competing bandwidth demands, Verve VSAT uses multiple access schemes for transactional and heavy traffic and automatic access schemes where bandwidth can be changed according to traffic type

Rapid Deployment
Compact design enables quick installation if individual sites and rapid deployment of large networks. A record of 230 sites installed in one month's time

Low Power Consumption
With less than 25w, Verve VSAT offers substantial savings with regards to UPS, battery or solar panel cost

 VSAT System Design
Verve VSAT network consists of a hub, satellite bandwidth and remote VSATs. The hub consists of RF terminal (RFT) and baseband equipment. The baseband includes a Hub Uplink and Downlink rack to interface with the VSAT remotes

An advanced, user-friendly Network management System (NMS) provides centralized monitoring and control, statistics, alarms and events, network configuration and report generation

In contrast to other VSAT networks, the hub architecture features internal hub switching for remote-to-remote circuit connectivity. System setup at each site comprises two major sub systems, namely:
  • OutDoor Unit (ODU)
  • InDoor Unit (IDU)
The ODU consists of an antenna, a Transmitter and a Receiver known as SSPA unit. The IDU consists of a modem and a router. ODU and IDU are connected by IFL (Inter Facility Link) cable with maximum distance of up to 100m for both sides. The antenna function is to receive and transmit signal from/to satellite. The antenna diameter depends on Satellite parameter (EIRP), bandwidth,, number of carrier and Transmitter power. Link budget calculation defines the diameter of  the antenna required and the transmitter power. The Transmitter and Receiver function are to transmit and receive signal to/from antenna and to convert IF-band frequency to RF-band (C Band) frequency. The quality of the transmitter is measured by power (Watt) and that of the receiver is measured by noise Temperature ( K)

Modem function is to modulate and demodulate signal from/to base band IF frequency (70 MHz). Modem specification comprises bandwidth (in kbps), modulation type (QPSK), coding type, FEC
